modern biography.

As the moon’s luminescence spilled through the night air and met shards of mirror glass on the ground, the looming silence of the darkness was met with a cry of new life. Evangeline Sofia Grimhilde D’Entença was born on July 13, forty-three minutes after midnight. Blanketed in the cold of an empty shell of a home, a luxurious show of armor now useless in its stead, porcelain - crafted limbs cradled the newborn. A woman who spent her entire life never loving another soul that wasn’t her own, never finding adoration in a vanity that did not meet her reflection, now bore the very title she had always considered her own downfall: she’d become a mother. Isolated in stubbornness, weakened without assistance, Regina carried her baby from her residence to the nearest hospital, passing out as soon as she was placed in a wheelchair and taken to care.Too proud to accept help beyond the hospital, and too vain to allow anyone else into her space, Regina took care of her daughter in the solitary of her apartment. There were moments when she stared down at wide hazel eyes, so innocent and full of life, that Regina wondered if she should have gone through with the procedure that would have erased her before she could grow from within - and then she wondered if she should have fashioned those broken mirror shards into a weapon of momentary desperation when it’d gotten too late. While she would never be the doting mother full of warmth, she loved her daughter in her own way, ensuring she would live and survive a better fate than she’d been given.Evelyn, more often called Evie, grew up finding love in the stars outside her bedroom window, escaped to another world when her mother played Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake, Op. 20, Act I: No. 2, Waltz, which would later be a song forever embedded in her heart. Evie met the harsh expectations of perfection before she could walk, making a friend in the mirror that taunted her daily and nightly, with the stick that lashed at her arms, hands, back, and shoulder when her posture was less than perfect.

Her mother, a woman who’d fallen from grace and yet still holding tightly to impossible standards, still wanted to nurture a form of royalty: Evie would be meant to hold the graceful composure of a princess.Despite Regina’s cold demeanor, Evie was able to find warmth within herself, embracing a certain grace and softness within her that not even her mother could stifle out. In addition to ballet, Evie developed a love for fashion, especially in creating her own pieces. This was treated as a side hobby, and she would rarely leave the house without something that wasn’t her own creation. Her interests shifted into science when she reached high school, having experienced a real lab for the first time - and she learned she was quite adept with chemistry, largely from the science books she’d collected throughout her adolescence.A master of many skills, manipulation and acting were the two main ones. Wearing a mask her entire life made the act itself effortless, a reflex by now. She harbored the reputation of a flirt, a heartbreaker, the girl who always got away. Talking was her best game, and she knew her way with words better than fighting with her fists, not that she lacked in that department, either. She was, after all, her mother’s daughter. Playing a role became easier and easier - she was the flirt, she was the girl with a pretty face and an empty head. Anything to get by, anything to gain admiration and approval from others. And still, she could never make her mother proud. When Evie was sixteen, she underestimated the dangers of the city she lived in and the game of exploration that landed her in a dark alley she shouldn’t have stepped foot in. Targeted and surrounded, she was stabbed and left for dead as she bled out onto the aged cement. She met death that night, feeling its sharp, freezing grasp around her throat - and then she awoke to stars watching down on her from the night sky. Blood pooled around her form, clinging to her clothes, her skin, and if not for the last sheer strength and energy within her to drag herself out onto the main street, she would not have lived. Discovered and hospitalized before she could bleed to death, the event was kept under wraps with her mother’s influence, not wanting her reputation to be tainted by it. This was a secret Evie would have to keep to her heart, though even weeks after her release, it would start to plague her dreams when she fell into slumber. Her mother’s love showed in the way she painted a story for themselves, hosting extravagant birthday parties, in the dedication of ballet training, in the way she spent far too long ensuring not a hair was out of place.

Evie was pushed to reach for the top and to accept nothing less, to go where the attention would favor her, and this included playing along with her mother’s attempts of match - making through the years. The older Evie got, the more distant yet paradoxically closer Regina got - in the way she watched her moves, the inspection of perceived flaws, but not in hugs or I love you’s that weren’t tied to an agenda. Praise and kindness were currency meant to be earned and rarely given out. The D’Entença home always lacked a certain warmth, and Evie had already learned to love the cold. With the reminder that weakness was not an option, Evie maintained her focus on trying to make her mother proud, to be the perfect princess she was meant to be. She excelled academically, she thrived in her social circles, and she participated in numerous activities, most notably ballet. There was never a shortage of company and admirers, and though Evie had always sought comfort in the presence of many, she could never shake the feeling of loneliness in even the busiest of crowds. She was always playing a part, wearing a mask, being a chameleon. After graduating high school, Evie attended a prestigious university with some distance from her mother, eager to live on her own. She double-majored in chemistry and fashion, minoring in business, all the while maintaining the role of a rising ballet star at her company. Through her college years, she interned at top fashion magazines, her reputation growing as a designer.Living on her own allowed her to explore her independency in a way she would never have done so back home, and she finds comfort in knowing she can finally learn who she is under the many layers of cultivated personas. Little does she know, a piece of her remains tethered to the past, and she would have to confront the demons slowly feeding on her.

There were moments when she stared down at wide hazel eyes, so innocent and full of life, that Regina wondered if she should have gone through with the spell that would have erased her before she could grow from within - and then she wondered if she should have fashioned those broken mirror shards into a weapon of momentary desperation when it’d gotten too late. While she would never be the doting mother full of warmth, she loved her daughter in her own way, ensuring she would live and survive a better fate than she’d been given centuries ago.Evlyn, more often called Evie, grew up knowing how to summon the stars in her room at night before ever saying her first word, watched as her mother spelled the entire floor to play Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake, Op. 20, Act I: No. 2, Waltz, which would later be a song forever embedded in her heart. Magic coursed through Evie, extended from her mother and this aspect was enough to please Regina, as she could find contentedness in knowing her own blood was worthy of her name - though this would not last long, as Evie’s powers had suddenly gone dormant without warning.Evie met the harsh expectations of perfection before she could walk, making a friend in the mirror that taunted her daily and nightly, with the stick that lashed at her arms, hands, back, and shoulder when her posture was less than perfect.

Although traditional royalty had died out in the modern world, she was still meant to hold the graceful composure of a princess. The D’Entença home always lacked a certain warmth, and Evie had already learned to love the cold.It wasn’t until she was thirteen that her magic had returned through her first attempt at protecting herself, conjuring a shield from flying glass shards directed at her. She would learn later on that this was her mother’s rather cruel method of drawing her magic out.Despite Regina’s cold demeanor, Evie was able to find warmth within herself, embracing a certain grace and softness within her that not even her mother could stifle out. In addition to ballet, Evie developed a love for fashion, especially in creating her own pieces. This was treated as a side hobby, and she would rarely leave the house without something that wasn’t her own creation. Her interests shifted into science when she reached high school, having experienced a real lab for the first time - and she learned she was quite adept with chemistry, most likely due to her work with potions and spells at home. And despite being gifted with magic, Evie hardly ever displayed it outside of her own discretion, not wanting to form a codependency. It was a part of her she loved and always wanted to explore, but not at the expense of taking her life for granted. A master of many skills, manipulation and acting were the two main ones. Wearing a mask her entire life made the act itself effortless, a reflex by now. She harbored the reputation of a flirt, a heartbreaker, the girl who always got away. Talking was her best game, and she knew her way with words better than fighting with her fists, not that she lacked in that department, either. Targeted and surrounded, she was stabbed and left for dead as she bled out onto the aged cement.

She met death that night, feeling its sharp, freezing grasp around her throat - and then she awoke to stars watching down on her from the night sky. Blood dried around her form, clinging to her clothes, but the wound had closed and all that was left behind was a faint scar near her abdomen. Magic had saved her, then. And it would continue to do so.She walked the entire way home, avoiding her mother and immediately showering, as if she could wash it all off. If not for the very real proof of what had happened, she would have thought it a vivid nightmare, but even then, it would start to plague her dreams when she fell into slumber. She never told another person what happened. There will come a time when she learns there can only be one sorceress in their line, and the fight for power and vanity will push her to face demons that were kept locked up.

act one  :  withered vanity.Regina D'Entença, otherwise known as the Evil Queen, was a queen whose reputation relied soley on her physical features, described as an icily beautiful woman with a serene, unfeeling face. Queen of her own realm, she was determined to remain the fairest of them all, equipped with her reliable mirror whose advice and pseudo-companionship she depended on. A cruel ruler, dusted bones of previous prisoners could be found in her dungeons, and she worked to terrorize her people out of pure enjoyment and desire for power. A sorceress, she harbored the gift to magick just about anything to her liking, often using her powers for deadly means. Obsessed with beauty, she grew jealous and vengeful of the girl who stole her spotlight. She died after poisoning Snow White, only to be resurrected and imprisoned on a new island, the Isle of the Lost. Filled with resentment and anger towards those who brought her back, she was forced to live a burdened life on an island that stripped her of her natural-born powers and her title. Despite this, she was still the Queen and kept her fearsome reputation known. Darker times called for lonesome moments and she found herself back in the arms of the same Huntsman who’d betrayed her. Nine months later, she was no longer alone but graced with the life of her newborn daughter.act three  :  anew.Born inside the dark and cold stones of Grimhilde’s castle, Evangeline, later called Evie, would carry on the infamous name that would reign terror unto anyone who knew the story of the Evil Queen. Raised only by Grimhilde and without the knowledge of who her father was, Evie was subjected to a life of high standards and tough love. Her mother sought to instill her legend and her power unto her daughter, decreeing she would live out her life the way she was meant to: as royalty, with power, and with beauty. Mother and daughter, a duo known to the Isle, Grimhildetook every opportunity to prepare Evie with the harsh realities of their predicament. Kindness meant weakness, acceptance meant submission --- those values pushed onto Evie from the moment she was able to talk. More hours were spent in front of a mirror and inspecting every flaw than survival necessities, and even more time was spent in royal training to become a true princess.Evie was used as a pawn by her mother, a puppet to exercise her reign and control over other inhabitants of the Isle.

When Evie turned six years old, Grimhilde made sure to invite all the notable children and family of the island, except for Maleficent and her daughter, purely to make a point of their rivalry. While Maleficent ruled the Island, Grimhilde sought to take over what she believed was rightfully hers, no matter the cost. Unfortunately, the little act resulted in Grimhilde and her daughter being castlebanned, forbidden outside their property at the risk of facing Maleficent’s wrath.Stuck behind stone walls, Evie was forced to watch life move on without her through her bedroom window and endure solidarity with a woman who slowly lost her sanity. On good days, Evie was able to convince her mother’s trolls to bring her back literature just so she could educate herself and read. The books were kept hidden under her bed in fear of disappointing her mother by focusing on anything other than herself and her princess training. Although Evie knew of the magic that ran in her blood, she was never taught about it and it was deemed a topic she was not allowed to discuss. When she wasn’t walking down the corridors with books on her head or practicing the upward strokes of an old, outdated brush, she practiced sword-fighting with her mother, a necessity for survival. Grimhilde preferred to be cold and distant to Evie, believing it would better prepare her for the harsh world they lived in. Compliments were never given without insults, praise nonexistent, and disappointment always had a price to pay. Fear played a major role in the Grimhilde castle. Evie liked to focus on the better parts of her life, and there were good days when her mother would smile and it didn’t feel like poison dripping or a warning. If it could have been better, she didn’t know how. After all, she’d never experienced a life better than the one she was given.Despite the cruelty and unrealistic standards that came with being Grimhilde’s daughter, Evie never quite felt at peace in being the villain she was supposed to be. She was gentle, kind, and caring, although those features never saw the light of day. A master of many skills, manipulation and acting were the two main ones. Wearing a mask her entire life made the act itself effortless, a reflex by now. By the time she was sixteen years old, she made the decision to leave the castle and attend Dragon Hall, hoping that the grudges held before were dropped. Her first instinct was always to play nice until the situation called for otherwise. A long and bumpy road of many dear-deaths and dangerous escapades, she was accepted into a group with three other villain kids, a group that would ensure her survival on the Isle without her mother.Although Evie had a penchant for taking the spotlight and drawing all the attention as she pleased, she learned to play submissive and quiet to satiate her group leader’s insecure grasp of the limited influence over the Isle. No one would ever see the princess without looking her absolute best, make-up kit on hand and never with dirt on her visage. She harbored the reputation of a flirt, a heartbreaker, the girl who always got away. Talking was her best game, and she knew her way with words better than fighting with her fists, not that she lacked in that department, either. Highly liked by many others on the Isle,

Evie knew the importance of making more friends than enemies and preferred to stay out of matters that didn’t concern her or would affect her safety. However, not everyone on the Isle had a good side and some were purely malicious, taking advantage of the Isle’s lawless environment. Targeted by a group of villain kids who rivaled Mal’s group, she was taken to an obscure location at dusk and stabbed, left to bleed out to death in the cold, quiet night. Unbeknownst to her, she was close enough to the hole in the dome Carlos had created not so long ago, which allowed her magic to keep in and protect her. She woke up twelve hours later, in the same spot, dried out blood staining her dress and her skin, the wound closed but a thick scar now dancing over her skin. At least it would blend with the others. Her body ached, head filled with flashbacks of the moments before her death. It would haunt her relentlessly, yet she never told anyone what happened.Playing a role became easier and easier. She was the princess, she was the flirt, she was the girl with a pretty face and empty head. Anything to get by, anything to gain admiration and approval from others. And still, she could never make her mother proud.act three  :  reinvented.Being given the opportunity to escape the Isle and live a new life in Auradon, she fully embraced the change and found herself to be a true Auradon girl. In Auradon, she could be the best version of herself that she kept hidden and locked away on the Isle. In Auradon, she was smart and kind and caring, intuitive and curious. In her heart, she would always be a princess, even if her royal status was null. She didn’t need titles to keep her afloat anymore, and she didn’t need to pretend to be someone other than herself. Pursuing her passion for the arts, fashion, science, and . . . well, everything, she took advantage of Auradon’s resources and learned as much as she could, almost as if she feared that one day, it would be taken away from her.It would prove, though, that no matter how hard she tried to leave the Isle behind, it would always follow her. It wasn’t long until her powers began to manifest, a symbol of her mother’s grasp on her and the sign of a continuation in the Grimhilde magic bloodline. With magic heavily discouraged, Evie would find herself facing newfound struggles and conflicts. It was no longer a battle with the Isle, but a battle with herself.

PRE-DESCENDANTS 1. ⠀⠀everything remains the same, although more detail regarding her life on the isle is in her biography. she was killed by a group of villain kids one night, not long after finally breaking her banishment. coincidentally, she was killed close enough to the hole in the dome caused by carlos, she suffered a gruesome death and bled out, only to be resurrected the next day, saved by her magic, fully healed with a scar and nightmares of her death as a reminder.002. DESCENDANTS I. ⠀⠀everything remains the same.003. PRE-DESCENDANTS II. ⠀⠀contrary to how the movies and the books portray mal and evie, they are not best friends. carlos is evie’s best friend. it takes evie quite a bit of time to heal from the attempted murder at the party mal invited her to with cruella’s trap closet, and just overall shifting from a member of mal’s group where there was a clear authority level. they are civil and acquainted, just not best friends. after the group had chosen to be good, evie put all of her focus into her coursework and started up her own mini business making gowns. she joined the chemistry club, taking an interest in creating her own chemical solutions. after growing familiar with the equipment, she began making her own make-up, perfume, lotion and various other products for self-use. her knowledge would extend beyond cosmetics and into restricted access, such as poison, drugs, and other harmful or “useful” substances. not for use, of course. pure curiosity. she also joined the cheer team out of pure curiosity and grew to love the sport.004. PRE-DESECNDANTS III. ⠀⠀evie’s 4 hearts grew increasingly fast, her income bigger than she’d ever imagined. her business was now well known, enough so that other important figures all throughout auradon and its regions had sought out her expertise. she grew skilled in the art of chemistry, now having a penchant for creating her own “potions” and making an arsenal that she keeps to herself for emergencies. she became co-captain of the cheer team, president of the science club, and ben’s official advisor. being ben’s advisor meant she’d work with him regarding all things isle and vk-related. they worked tirelessly to come up with a program to bring more vks over.about a month or so after cotillion, evie’s powers manifested to the point where it depended severely on her emotions. after a confrontation had escalated, she accidentally threw a student back against a building, leaving said student to be temporarily hospitalized with a minor concussion and sprained ankle. because not everyone was paying attention, she got away with magic but faced repercussions and had to apologize despite the fact that she was justified in defending herself. out of fear of losing any more control, with ben’s permission, she traveled back to the isle to meet with her mother and learn more of her magic heritage. she returned to auradon with the family grimoires, resources she found extremely helpful as nothing in auradon regarding magic helped. she began practicing magic in small intervals, from small-scale spells to larger ones as time went on. her magic seldom required incantation. this part of her life was kept secret from everyone, including the core four.senior year of high school, evie takes part in science clubs and competitions, also finding solace in auradon city’s ballet hall.after graduating, she bought her own “cottage”/starter castle and expanded her business. she was more skilled in her magic, essentially content with her life and the way things were progressing.(i view d3 as being at least over a year or two after d2, so they had already graduated and whatnot)006. DESCENDANTS III. ⠀⠀evie was ben’s advisor through and through. she had priority and authority (after ben) with any developments regarding the isle and the vks. vk day was not a thing. a more humane program was created that essentially dealt with applications more in-depth and considered intensely. applicants were notified beforehand and were given time to adjust to the news.

by now, evie’s extremely skilled with her magic, to the point where she didn’t have to consult her grimoires for spells and had the ones she frequently used memorized, as well as her “instinctual” magic that didn’t require spells.audrey’s queen of mean phase still occurs and she works with her friends to resolve the issue. it became harder to keep her magic a secret around uma and mal, and she finally exposed herself helping out with the removal of wooden planks. obviously she didn’t do “one kiss” with doug because she broke up with doug before cotillion in d2. everything else happens canonically, except for the barrier.the barrier doesn’t go down completely. a better system is created that involves getting all the kids who want to leave the island out, while making the isle more habitable for those who wish to stay or those who weren’t allowed to leave since they were harmful and couldn’t be trusted.007. POST-DESCENDDANTS III. ⠀⠀a well-known fashion designer and seamstress, evie’s 4 hearts has expanded beyond her imagination and reached levels of recognition she never would have expected. practically famous in auradon, she became a public figure for many things besides her fashion line. she’s one of the top ballet performers in the region. she is ambassador for the isle and the vks. she’s personally greeted every new vk and visited the isle frequently to help prepare incoming vks and provide more information regarding her program. when she isn’t focusing on her program, she brings over a large collection of clothing every six months just for those on the isle to have (her version of pro bono). she also takes notes of any complaints or issues on the isle to quickly acknowledge tensions. evie cares immensely for getting justice for those who have been wronged, making sure the vks are treated with respect and overall helping them adjust to living in auradon. with her magic, she’s created a “hideout” for the vks to utilize (essentially just a safe-space).* this is just my own headcanon, but i would assume auradon developed some justice system after more and more vks came over and the rehabilitation and reconstruction of the isle, so crimes in auradon are more and more likely to occur. because the vks are less likely to receive fair treatment in court proceedings, evie studied the law and became an official advocate, go-to lawyer for the vks.life for evie is as good as it could be, even though she still struggles with memories of her death and having to acknowledge her murderers at some point should they ever decide to leave the isle.
